Credit card rewards programs come in a variety of different flavours, but the basic idea is that for each dollar you spend on your credit card you will receive a certain number of rewards points to redeem through the credit card companies rewards program. Some rewards programs are setup to offer you 1.5 rewards points per dollar spent whilst others offer you 1 reward point for each dollar spent. Sometimes you will see that some cards have a promotion which will entitle you to 3 rewards points for every dollar spent at a certain retailer and this can be a great way of gaining some quick points on your credit card reward program.

Beware not all rewards programs are made equal

Keep in mind that all because some rewards programs offer 2 points for every dollar spent and others only offer 1 it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will actually be able to obtain a better or even equivalent reward for the same number of rewards points. Some credit card companies use this as a tactic to initially gain consumers interest in the credit card, it is not until consumers hcave signed up for the credit card that they realize they would have been better off with another card.

Travel with your credit card rewards points

Travelling is great fun and when you can do it for nicks its even better! One of the most common products people redeem their credit card reward points for is to travel. Just about all credit card rewards programs have an option to redeem the points earned for travel related products whether it be hotel stays, air line tickets using a frequent flyer program or cruises. One point to keep in mind is that you may not necessarily be able to redeem your points at precisely the time when you would like to travel. If you plan to use your reward points to travel then it is a good idea to contact the rewards progam well in advance to see if you can use your points at that time.

When can you use your reward credit card points?

Sometimes there are restrictions on when and how you can use your credit card rewards points. If rewards points are going to be a key feature for you then you should look closely at the terms and conditions of the card when signing up to ensure that you are able to use the credit card rewards points when and how you would like to.

Finally we would suggest to you that you don’t solely choose a credit card based on the rewards progam alone but take into account the features and costs of the credit card to ensure it is align with what you need in a credit card.
